The Miro Cloth | James Mudge Furniture Studio and Cape Town Furniture Week
A collaboration of contemporary local production; a traditional weave; a rhythmic yarn blend and the cloth it yields. For Cape Town Furniture Week, Mungo and James Mudge Furniture Studio present a collaboration grounded in shared values. Both originating from the Garden Route, their practices prioritise longevity, material integrity, and thoughtful design.
Setting the warp for the Miro cloth at the Mungo Mill
Bringing together a blend of cotton, wool, mohair, and silk
The Miro Cloth balances strength, softness, and durability. Mungo’s designer, Lenore, based the Miro cloth on a traditional weaving method, Overshot, that has been used in upholstery for decades. The strong graphic elements of the design bring together block and twill patterns, with wool in muted jade, grey, and sage providing the base, while mohair and silk lend playful pops of warmth, all coming together in a subtle surface rhythm.
“Combining multiple animal and natural fibres into one fabric felt like trying out a new recipe: cotton in the warp for strength and structure; wool and mohair to add warmth and durability, while silk gives smoothness and a subtle sheen.”
– Lenore, Mungo designer
Woven on Mungo’s modern looms, the cloth reflects our traditional weaving roots while leveraging newer technology to enhance both the design process and the finished cloth.
“I wondered what earlier generations would think of their old traditional weave brought to life on a modern loom.”
– Lenore, Mungo designer

Beautiful fabric and an inspired combination with the lines of the furniture! Unfortunately I am in the US so won’t be able to make the “unveiling”. But I wonder if you’ll be selling the fabric by the yard? I am a big fan of your products and your thoughtful care and sustainability.

Will you be selling Miro cloth for upholstery purposes?
